Start here: Look for Show transcript in the video description and check whether the player offers captions. If YouTube has no available captions, Copy YouTube Transcript cannot create them. If captions are present but copying fails, check the active video tab and retry after reloading it.
Check the video before changing anything
- Open the video’s own YouTube page rather than an embedded player on another site.
- Expand the description and look for Show transcript. This is the entry point in YouTube’s transcript instructions.
- Check the player’s CC control. YouTube says this control appears when captions are available. See its caption settings guide.
- Try a second video whose transcript you can open. If that works, the first video may have a different caption availability or processing state.
Words drawn into a video are not necessarily a selectable caption track. For example, a creator may add animated text directly to a Short. Seeing that text does not establish that a transcript is available to copy.
| What you see | Next step |
|---|---|
| Transcript opens normally | Copy manually, or check the extension steps below |
| Captions play but no transcript control is visible | Reload the watch page and check the expanded description; availability or interface behavior may differ |
| No captions or transcript available | Check again later for a new upload, or ask the creator for a transcript |
| Only one video fails in the extension | Compare with a known captioned video and note the error |
Why might YouTube have no transcript yet?
YouTube says automatic captions can take time to process. It also lists unsupported language, poor audio, overlapping speech and long silence among reasons caption generation can fail. A livestream replay may need new captions after the stream ends. See YouTube’s automatic-caption troubleshooting.
There is no waiting time that guarantees a transcript will appear. A new upload might become available later; a video without usable caption data may not. Repeatedly installing transcript extensions will not create missing captions.
If you only need a particular section, ask the creator whether they have a written version or notes. If you need a transcription from audio you can legitimately provide, that is a separate speech-to-text task. This extension retrieves caption text and does not perform that job.
If YouTube shows a transcript but the extension fails
These checks help distinguish a page-loading problem from a problem affecting all videos. They are troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fix for every caption retrieval error.
- Check the active tab. Keep the intended YouTube video selected when you open the extension. A different tab or an embedded player may not supply the expected video.
- Reload the video page. After installing or updating the extension, reload an already-open YouTube tab, let it load, then reopen the extension.
- Try one known captioned video. Use a video whose native transcript you just opened. Compare the result with the video that failed.
- Read the error. A failure to retrieve captions is different from text being retrieved but not copied to the clipboard. If the error concerns copying, retry with the copy button or use Text export when available.
- Use the native transcript for the immediate task. If YouTube’s panel works, copy from it while you investigate the extension issue.
If the failure continues, note your extension version, the exact error, whether the native transcript opens and whether one or several videos fail. Send those details through the extension’s support or feedback channel. Include a public video URL if you are comfortable sharing it; there is no need to send your full notes or transcript to describe the problem.
Once copying works, follow the TXT download guide to save a file, or keep timestamps to find a quote.
If the video belongs to you
Use YouTube Studio’s subtitle controls to review existing captions or add a caption track. YouTube supports uploading a subtitle file, entering text and other caption-authoring workflows. Follow its instructions for adding subtitles and captions for the current options.
Check important names, numbers and technical vocabulary before publishing captions. A viewer’s transcript-copying tool cannot correct the original caption track for everyone. Editing your source captions addresses the text viewers will receive.
Common questions
Does turning CC on create a transcript?
No. Turning the caption display on is different from generating a caption track. It is a useful availability check, not a way to transcribe uncaptured speech.
Can I copy captions from a Short?
The extension supports Shorts with available captions on desktop Chrome. Use the Shorts transcript steps. The same caption requirement applies; visible text burned into the video is not enough.
Will Pro fix a missing transcript?
A paid upgrade does not create captions that YouTube has not made available. Free copying and TXT export use available caption data. Pro’s extra export and AI features do not remove that prerequisite.
Why does the transcript contain mistakes?
The copied text can reflect mistakes in the source captions. Listen to the relevant section before relying on a quotation. Removing timestamps or changing line spacing changes formatting, not transcription accuracy.
Copy captions when they are available
Use Copy YouTube Transcript for free copying, formatting and TXT export. It cannot create captions for a video that has none.
